5-Formyl-2-methylpyrimidine is an organic molecule that can be used as a substrate for the synthesis of chiral compounds. Chiral molecules are molecules that are not identical, but mirror images of each other. These molecules can be synthesized from 5-formyl-2-methylpyrimidine and chlorate. The reaction starts with the addition of chlorate to 5-formyl-2-methylpyrimidine in aqueous ammonia solution. This reaction produces a chiral product, which is separated using chromatography or crystallization into two enantiomers: one right handed and one left handed. The right handed enantiomer is then oxidized to form the final product, 2-(chloromethyl)pyrimidinone.
