The compound also reduces the number of viable cells in culture supernatants from these bacteria. The mechanism of action of 4'-fluoro-2'-hydroxyacetophenone is not known but may be related to its ability to form covalent bonds with carbonyl groups present in enzymes or protein structures.The compound can also spontaneously combust when heated to decomposition. This combustion releases fluorine gas which could cause environmental pollution if released into the atmosphere during its manufacture or use.
