It has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells and induce cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis. Fmoc-alpha-methylalanine has also been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. This drug is synthesized from a grignard reagent with carbon nanotubes and 2-aminoisobutyric acid. The biphenyl group on the alpha position of the side chain serves as a fluorescence probe for detection in biological systems.
