2-Fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetic acid is a chloroform soluble, white solid. It has a melting point of 73°C and is stable in the presence of water and alcohols. The compound can be purified by recrystallization from acetone or tetrahydrofuran. 2-Fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetic acid has been used in organic syntheses as an acetal protecting group for amino acids, including lysine and tyrosine.
2-Fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetic acid is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, such as the antihistamine Allegra, the antibiotic erythromycin A, and the antiviral drug Tamiflu.
