F-M-R-F is a peptide that has been shown to have an analgesic effect. It is synthesized from the amino acid methionine and has three phenylalanine residues and two arginine residues. F-M-R-F is derived from the nerve cell membrane protein synaptosomal associated protein of 25,000 daltons (SNAP25). F-M-R-F has been found to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, noradrenaline, and 5HT. This compound also inhibits protease activity in the brain and thus may be a potential therapeutic agent for Parkinson's disease or other neurodegenerative diseases. FMRF exerts its pharmacological effects by binding to receptors on nerve cells.
