H-Glu(pNA)-OH is a synthetic substrate that is used in the study of enzyme kinetics. It is an inorganic acid that contains a carboxy group, which makes it similar to glucose. Unlike glucose, however, H-Glu(pNA)-OH does not react with human serum albumin and has a pH optimum of 6.0. H-Glu(pNA)-OH may be used as a substitute for glucose to study oxidative injury on enzymes or to investigate interactive effects of various compounds on enzyme activity. H-Glu(pNA)-OH reacts with oxygen at the surface of the reaction solution and generates fluorescent light when tryptophan fluorescence is measured. This substrate can also be used for histochemical staining because it does not react with tissue proteins.
