Glyphosate-sodium is a glyphosate salt that is highly soluble in water. It is used as a herbicide to control weeds and has been shown to be effective against most species of plants. The processable form of glyphosate-sodium can be formulated into a variety of products, including herbicides, plant growth regulators, corrosion inhibitors, and reaction vessels. Glyphosate-sodium inhibits the synthesis of amino acids by inhibiting the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSP synthase), which catalyzes the conversion of shikimate-3- phosphate and phosphoenolpyruvate to 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP). This inhibition prevents plants from synthesizing three aromatic amino acids: phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan.
