Beschreibung

Glycochenodeoxycholic acid sodium salt is a bile acid that is naturally found in human patients. It is metabolized from cholic acid, which is synthesized from cholesterol. Glycochenodeoxycholic acid sodium salt is used to treat liver disease, specifically for the reduction of serum levels of bile acids and for the control of bile acid homeostasis. One mechanism by which it achieves this goal is by inhibiting the synthesis of taurocholic acid, which would otherwise increase the production of toxic secondary bile acids. Glycochenodeoxycholic acid sodium salt has been shown to be effective in lowering serum levels of bile acids and improving symptoms in human patients with liver disease. It also shows dose-dependent effects on endpoints such as serum bilirubin and liver enzymes. This drug has been used as a lead compound to develop other medications that act as choleretics or antisecretory agents.
