The chemical properties of glyoxylic acid are similar to those of other alpha-hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid and mandelic acid. It can be used as an analytical method for determining the presence of neurokinin-1 receptor in biological samples. Glyoxylic acid has antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. Glyoxylic acid also has pharmacokinetic properties that make it useful for hiv infection.
