Glyoxal is a water-soluble, reactive chemical that is used in many industrial applications. Glyoxal has been shown to be an active inhibitor of the glyoxalase system, which is involved in the production of glucose from fructose. It can be used as a fluorescence probe for biological samples and its effect on mitochondrial membrane potential has been studied. The rate constant for glyoxal has been determined and its optimum concentration found to be 0.1 M. Glyoxal is also used as an analytical method for wastewater treatment and can react with metals such as copper, silver, gold, and platinum to form coordination compounds. X-ray diffraction data for glyoxal have been collected at ambient conditions and analyzed using density functional theory calculations.
