18-alpha-Glycyrrhetinic acid is a natural compound that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. 18-alpha-Glycyrrhetinic acid inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin 1β (IL1β), from 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. It also acts as an inhibitor of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling in mouse models of colitis. Glycyrrhetinic acid was also found to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction in human cells, and it has been shown to inhibit the growth of murine hepatoma cells in vivo. This compound also has inhibitory effects on squamous cell carcinomas and neuronal death in vitro.
