3-Hydroxypyridine is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound that is present in the human body. It has been shown to be an intermediate in the metabolism of some drugs and other xenobiotics, and thus can be used as a biomarker for measuring the exposure to these substances. 3-Hydroxypyridine is also found in wastewater treatment plants and industrial effluents where it may accumulate due to its stability. 3-Hydroxypyridine can react with hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, or ozone to form reactive intermediates that are capable of damaging biological macromolecules such as DNA and proteins. These reactions have been studied extensively using model systems. 3-Hydroxypyridine reacts with hydroxyl groups on other molecules through the formation of hydrogen bonding interactions or by forming intramolecular hydrogen bonds.
