The hydrazide derivatives are a group of antimicrobial agents that are used to treat bacterial infections. These drugs have been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, as well as Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The mechanism of action for these compounds is not fully understood, but it is believed that they may bind to the bacterial ribosomes or interfere with the synthesis of proteins. The hydrochloric acid in stomach acid activates the drug by forming an intermediate molecule that can react with protein molecules in the bacterial cell wall. This reaction leads to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis and causing DNA damage. The chemical structures of these drugs have been determined using a variety of techniques including gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
