2,4-Hexadiene is an organic compound that is reactive and participates in stepwise cationic polymerization. It has two geometric isomers (Z-2,4-hexadiene and E-2,4-hexadiene), and both are used in the synthesis of polymers. Z-2,4-hexadiene reacts with pentane to yield a copolymer of hexadiene (polyhexadiyne) and butadiene. The reaction mechanism for this process is believed to be a radical chain reaction. 2,4-Hexadiene also reacts with alkynes to produce polymers with alternating alkene units.
