Hexamethyldisiloxane is a volatile liquid that has a boiling point of -32.2°C and a molecular weight of 88.09 g/mol. Hexamethyldisiloxane is used in the production of polymers, such as polydimethylsiloxane, which are used in many applications including cosmetics and food packaging. Hexamethyldisiloxane can be polymerized by cationic polymerization, which occurs when hexamethyldisiloxane is reacted with an acid or base at constant pressure, producing polydimethylsiloxane with an average molecular weight of 2000-8000. Hexamethyldisiloxane is also used in organic chemistry for kinetic studies because it has an infrared spectrum that shifts to the right with increasing temperature. This means that the frequency will increase as the temperature increases, so ft-ir spectroscopy can be used to measure the kinetic energy released by reactions involving this compound at various temperatures
