2-Hydroxy-2-phenylacetohydrazide is a diagnostic agent that can be used in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, kidney disease, and cardiovascular diseases. 2-Hydroxy-2-phenylacetohydrazide is a racemized form of phenylacetic acid that has been labeled with fluorescent tags for use as an amide. It binds to receptors in the human body and is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, which makes it useful for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders. The mechanism by which 2-hydroxy-2-phenylacetohydrazide works involves inhibition of cellular metabolic pathways by binding to enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase, choline kinase, and glutamate dehydrogenase. This inhibits the synthesis of acetylcholine, leading to cell death by apoptosis.
