3-Hydroxypropyl)sulfamic acid is a biologically active sulfate that has been found in reliable high-throughput analyses of biological samples. It is structurally similar to the amino acid cysteine, and is derived from the oxidation of L-cysteine. 3-Hydroxypropyl)sulfamic acid can be biotransformed to sulfapyridine, which is a pharmaceutical used as an antibacterial agent. 3-Hydroxypropyl)sulfamic acid also has carcinogenic effects on rats when given orally or by injection. This compound can be chemically synthesized and has been shown to have similar properties as the naturally occurring compound.
