4'-(Hexyloxy)-4-biphenylcarbonitrile is a switchable, low molecular weight, protonated molecule with an nmr spectrum that can be tuned in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is a good candidate for optical and electrochemical polymerization. 4'-(Hexyloxy)-4-biphenylcarbonitrile has been shown to form a helical structure in polymer films and zinc oxide nanoparticles. The optical properties of this compound are dependent on its spatial morphology.
