4-Hydroxyphenethyl alcohol (4-HPPA) is a caffeic acid derivative that has been shown to have antiproliferative and antioxidant properties. 4-HPPA inhibits the growth of Candida glabrata by inhibiting the activities of various enzymes, including cinnamoyl esterase, carboxylesterase, lipoxygenase, and cyclooxygenase. This compound also induces apoptosis in HL-60 cells and shows cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. The analytical method for 4-HPPA has been developed using HPLC with UV detection or high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. 4-HPPA can be extracted from fructus ligustri or wild-type strains of Salidroside. The optimum concentration of 4-HPPA is between 0.1-10 mM in a buffer solution at pH 5-6.
