It has a potency of 1/10th that of prednisolone and is used as an industrial preparation, such as for the production of plastics. 16a-Hydroxyprednisolone is prepared by reacting phthalic anhydride with hydrocortisone or hydrocortisone acetate. Impurities are removed by preparative thin-layer chromatography using silica gel plates. The product can be purified further by recrystallization from water or from chloroform/methanol mixtures.
