5-Hydroxymebendazole-d3 is an analog of the benzimidazole compound mebendazole. It is a drug that can be used to treat cancer and other diseases caused by helminth worms, such as tapeworms, flukes, pinworms, and roundworms. 5-Hydroxymebendazole-d3 has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in plasma cells, which are cells that produce antibodies. In addition, this drug is able to inhibit the production of DNA in muscle tissue. The analytical methods for determining 5-hydroxymebendazole-d3 concentrations in urine samples have been validated for use with mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography. This drug also has limited anthelmintic activity against gastrointestinal roundworms.
