2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone-5-sulfonic acid hydrate (2HMBPS) is a sulfonic acid that is used as a photoinitiator in the production of polymers. It is also used as an additive in wastewater treatment to reduce the amount of bacteria and light exposure. 2HMBPS has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals, such as singlet oxygen. 2HMBPS has also been shown to have inhibitory effects on skin cancer cells and potential for use in photodynamic therapy. The salt form of this compound, monosodium 2HMBPS, can be found in human serum. Acute toxicities are not known at this time.
