3-Hydroxy carbamazepine is a reactive, water soluble compound with a molecular weight of 197.3 g/mol. It is the major metabolite of carbamazepine, which is an anticonvulsant drug used to treat epilepsy and nerve pain. 3-Hydroxy carbamazepine has been detected in urine samples of women using this medication and it has been shown that it can be eliminated from the body through the kidneys. 3-Hydroxy carbamazepine is also found in wastewater treatment plants, where it may act as a chemical inhibitor for biological treatment processes. This compound has been studied for its toxicity and found to have both acute and chronic effects, including neurotoxicity and mutagenicity.
