It is a hydroxy derivative that has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis and increase mitochondrial membrane potential. This drug also inhibits the activity of enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, including the enzyme acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase, thereby reducing the production of fatty acids. The hydroxy derivative of pioglitazone has been shown to have an improved pharmacokinetic profile when compared with its parent compound.
