It has been shown to inhibit neuronal death in rats with an injury to the hippocampus, but it does not inhibit glutamate excitotoxicity. 5-Hydroxy-1-tetralone binds to adenosine receptors and has been shown to have antihistamine effects in mice. This drug also inhibits the activity of the enzyme human aldose reductase, which may be related to its ability to lower blood sugar levels.
