3-Hydroxy-2-methyl isoborneol (3HMI) is a metabolite of isoborneol and has been found to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth. 3HMI is produced from the hydroxylation of isoborneol by rhodococcus and pseudomonas, which are bacteria that are found in soil and water. 3HMI inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting DNA synthesis, RNA synthesis, and protein synthesis. This metabolite also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
