Beschreibung

Glycine is a neutral, hydrophilic amino acid. It is the simplest of all amino acids, containing only one functional group. Glycine is not used as a proteinogenic amino acid because it cannot be converted to a keto acid. In biological systems, glycine plays an important role in the biosynthesis of purines and pyrimidines - compounds that form DNA. It also participates in other chemical reactions such as the synthesis of bile salts and glutathione which are important for detoxification processes within the body. Glycine also has inhibitory properties on amines and fatty acids, which may be due to its ability to form stable complexes with reactive functional groups such as hydroxyls.
