It has been shown to have biological functions such as inhibition of glucose uptake and activation of transport properties in recombinant cells. 3-Hydroxybutyric acid also has a role in regulation of intracellular pH, which can be measured by monitoring changes in the levels of hydrochloric acid or sodium salts in urine samples. The biological function of 3-hydroxybutyric acid may be related to its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This compound has been successfully used as a model protein for cytosolic proteins.
