(R)-(+)-b-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone is a chiral molecule that has been shown to be hydrolyzed by both lipase and benzyl alcohol dehydrogenase. The optical rotation of this compound is +100°, which can be determined using a polarimeter. It is also an optically active substance, with the enantiomeric excess of 100%. (R)-(+)-b-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone has been found to react with the nucleophile c1-8 alkyl. This reaction occurs in a ring-opening reaction, which has been shown to occur in alkali metal ion catalysis.
