(2S,3S)-Hydroxybupropion hydrochloride is a hydrochloride salt form of bupropion. It binds to the benzodiazepine binding site in the forebrain and has been shown to have a low affinity for rat brain receptors. (2S,3S)-Hydroxybupropion hydrochloride has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of dopamine uptake in rats with chronic administration. This drug may be useful as an antidepressant because it is not associated with the abuse potential or withdrawal effects associated with other antidepressants.
