• Beschreibung: Kaurane diterpenoids are a class of natural products that have been shown to be potent inhibitors of inflammatory bowel disease. Ent-kaurane diterpenoid 5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (5KD) is one such example. It has been shown to inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 and nitric oxide from human colonic cells. The mechanism by which 5KD inhibits inflammation is not yet fully understood, but it may involve blocking the activation of cyclooxygenase enzymes or inhibiting the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 1 beta. 5KD also has demonstrated activity against cancerous cells in vitro and in vivo, suggesting an application for cancer therapy.
