L-a-Hydroxyisocaproic acid is a fatty acid that is structurally similar to the amino acids valine and leucine. It is an intermediate in the formation of L-a-hydroxyvaleric acid, which can be used for energy production in the form of ketone bodies. It can also inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes and blocking protein synthesis. L-a-Hydroxyisocaproic acid has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to suppress cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes and reduce prostaglandin production. This agent has also been shown to reduce hepatic steatosis in rats. L-a-Hydroxyisocaproic acid has been used in cell culture studies as a structural probe for determining the shape of proteins and nucleic acids.
