It is synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with the reaction products of copper complex with coumarin derivatives. 4HNC has an intramolecular hydrogen bond and a frequency shift, which can be seen on spectroscopy. This active form inhibits bacterial growth by interacting with the carboxylate group in the enzyme nitro reductase and hydroxyl group in soybean lipoxygenase.
