It has been shown to be an inhibitor of the ns5b polymerase, which is responsible for the synthesis of DNA in eukaryotic cells. It also has anti-malarial activity and has been shown to inhibit both the erythrocytic and liver stages of Plasmodium falciparum. 5-Hydroxy-2-nitrobenzoic acid also inhibits chrysomya albiceps, which is a species of musca that causes photodecomposition. This product is not active against strains with resistance to amino acids or anthranilic acid.
