4-Iodobutylacetate is an innovative cyclopentenone with interesting chiral properties. 4-Iodobutylacetate is the first known compound that contains a cyclopentenone moiety and an iodine atom in the same molecule. It is synthesized by alkylation of 4-iodobutyric acid with isopropyl bromide followed by reaction with acetone and potassium hydroxide. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied extensively, revealing some interesting features. The allylic oxidation of 4-iodobutylacetate does not generate an epoxide intermediate, but rather proceeds through a radical reaction to form a peroxy radical. This product reacts with purine to produce pyrimidine derivatives via phosphatase catalysis.
