Isobutyronitrile is a chemical compound with the formula CH3CH2CN. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in alcohol and ether, but not water. Isobutyronitrile is a pharmaceutical drug that has been used to treat cyanide poisoning. The compound has been shown to be effective in protecting against cyanide poisoning by binding to the hydroxyl group of cytochrome c oxidase, preventing the formation of hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Isobutyronitrile is also used as an intermediate for organic synthesis and as a polymerization agent. It reacts with hydrochloric acid to form polyisobutylene, which can be used in making synthetic rubber or plastics. The reaction mechanism for this process involves protonation of the nitrogen atom followed by nucleophilic attack on the protonated nitrile by chloride ion. This causes displacement of chloride ion from the reactant molecule and formation of isobutyronitri
