2-Isonicotinoyl-N-phenylhydrazinecarbothioamide is a methoxy, isonicotinic, piperazine compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase. This leads to the inhibition of purine synthesis and cell death. It has been shown that this compound binds to the enzyme with an efficiency similar to that of hydrazide and thiosemicarbazide. 2-Isonicotinoyl-N-phenylhydrazinecarbothioamide has also been observed in a variety of bacterial species including Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. The acidic nature of this molecule may also contribute to its antibacterial activity.
