1-Iodooctane is a pyrimidine compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It reacts with metal surfaces such as stainless steel and copper to produce the corresponding hydroxyl groups. 1-Iodooctane can react with hydrochloric acid to form halides, which are active substances that are effective against bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. The reaction mechanism of 1-iodooctane is illustrated below:
The reaction vessel is heated to produce a proton (H+), which initiates the reaction by attacking the hydrogen atom on the alkynyl group at position 3 on the pyrimidine ring. This creates a carbocation intermediate (C+) which then reacts with a chloride ion from hydrochloric acid to form a chloroalkene intermediate (CCl). This intermediate then reacts with another chloride ion from hydrochloric acid to form an alkyl halide product.
