Imazethapyrammonium is a herbicide that inhibits amino transferase, an enzyme in the shikimate pathway. It has been shown to have sublethal effects on bacteria, including inhibition of enzyme activities, changes in nitrogen metabolism, and changes in energy metabolism. Imazethapyrammonium is active against a number of bacterial strains and has been shown to be most effective at low concentrations. This compound has a high detection sensitivity for plants and can be used as a tool for studying plant metabolism. Imazethapyrammonium is chiral, with the (S) form being more biologically active than the (R) form. The optimal pH for this compound is between 4-6. It is also sensitive to light and cannot be stored indefinitely.
