Itaconic acid is a reactive, high molecular weight compound that has been found to have synergistic effects when combined with glycol ethers. It is synthesized from maleic acid and is used in the manufacture of polyesters. Itaconic acid also has disease-modifying properties, which may be due to its ability to alter transcriptional regulation and mitochondrial functions. The wild-type strain of mice treated with itaconic acid showed lower levels of disease activity than the control group. Itaconic acid also has an effect on the expression of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and TLR4 in human macrophages, which may be related to its role in water vapor transport and energy metabolism.
