4-Isopropylaniline is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the preparation of dyes and pharmaceuticals. It is also used in analytical chemistry to determine the concentration of chloride in urine samples, using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. 4-Isopropylaniline has been shown to react with cyanide ions to form hydrogen cyanide, which can be detected by chemical ionization. This reaction requires a homogeneous catalyst such as palladium or platinum. The cleavage products are amines, which can be detected with nmr spectroscopy. 4-Isopropylaniline reacts with carbonyl groups to form Friedel-Crafts type reactions, which can be detected by mass spectrometry.
