Iron citrate is a compound that contains iron (III) and citric acid. It is used as a dietary supplement to treat or prevent iron deficiency, such as anemia. Iron citrate is not absorbed in the gut and must be taken with food or other dietary supplements containing iron because it can cause stomach upset.
