Iodo[tris(trifluoromethyl)]germane is a volatile, colorless gas that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is an experimental molecule that has been studied by crystallography, multinuclear NMR, and theory. Iodo[tris(trifluoromethyl)]germane can be activated by azide and undergoes oxidation to form the corresponding nitrilium ion. This species may be viewed as a counterpart of chloroiodo[bis(trifluoromethyl)]germane (CIIG) because it exhibits similar reactivity.
Iodo[tris(trifluoromethyl)]germane reacts with alkenes to produce 1-iodoalkenes or 2-iodoalkenes depending on the type of alkene present. The reaction is believed to proceed through initial addition of one electron followed by a second electron from the alkene to
