Beschreibung

6-Keto 17b-estradiol is a metabolite of 17β-estradiol. It is used as a model system to study the biological properties of 17β-estradiol and the role of the hydroxyl group in its metabolism. 6-Keto 17b-estradiol is produced in rat liver microsomes by cytochrome P450, which converts estrone into 6-keto estrone. The biological properties of 6-keto 17b-estradiol have been studied in women with breast cancer. This metabolite shows anti-proliferative activity by binding to estrogen receptors and inhibiting protein synthesis. Its chemical stability can be improved by adding a disulfide bond. The contraceptive effect of 6-keto 17b-estradiol has been shown in studies on rats, where it was found to be effective in preventing pregnancy when given at high doses over an extended period of time.
