It binds to the neurokinin-1 receptor and inhibits the production of Substance P, which is a peptide hormone. The pharmacokinetic properties of this drug have been studied in rats and humans with good results. Kassinin has also been shown to inhibit the activity of polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) by acting on the alpha-adrenergic receptors on these cells, leading to a decrease in PMNL chemotaxis. Kassinin has been found to be effective when used as an experimental treatment for detrusor muscle dysfunction in rats.
