Lucimycin is a polyene antibiotic that has been shown to have strong anti-infective properties against microbial infection. It is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including resistant mutants. Lucimycin has been shown to interact with hydroxyl groups on the bacterial cell membrane, which may be due to its ability to form polymers. The polyene structure also allows for binding to the DNA polymerase of the bacterial cell. Lucimycin has been found to be effective in treating choroidal neovascularization, a condition where new blood vessels grow on or near the retina and can lead to blindness. This drug also interacts with sodium citrate and proton pumps in the intestine, which may be responsible for its ability to treat diarrhoea.
