Lamotrigine is a drug that is used as an antifungal agent in the treatment of mycotic infections. It has also been used for the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric disorders. Lamotrigine N2-oxide is a metabolite of lamotrigine. The chemical reaction between lamotrigine and carbamazepine can produce the N2-oxide form of lamotrigine. This compound has been shown to be effective against wastewater bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis.
The N2-oxide form of lamotrigine can be produced by oxidation products in water treatment systems or by lettuce grown with high levels of nitrogen fertilizer.
