Lithium L-lactate is a salt of lithium and L-lactic acid. It has been used as a drug to treat bipolar disorder, although its use has been limited due to the potential for neurotoxicity. Lithium L-lactate binds to the mitochondrial membrane, causing depolarization and subsequent activation of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) channel. This leads to an increase in intracellular calcium levels, which activates enzymes that are involved in energy metabolism and structural analysis. The binding of lithium ions to p2y receptors induces neuronal cell death. Lithium L-lactate also has clinical relevance because it can be used to measure serum lithium levels in patients with bipolar disorder or those who have taken lithium medications.
