4-Methyl-3-nitroanisole is a phytoalexin that is produced by plants in response to infection. It is an aromatic compound that has been shown to have antiviral properties and can be used as a diagnostic for plant viruses. 4-Methyl-3-nitroanisole also has cholinergic properties, which means it can stimulate the uptake of acetylcholine at the synapse. This compound does not have any biological activity against other organisms, such as bacteria or fungi. It was synthesized from optically active starting materials using asymmetric synthesis. The biological studies on this compound show that it is metabolized into two distinct products: hydroxyl and alkylating agents, with the latter being more biologically active than the former. 4-Methyl-3-nitroanisole has shown inhibitory effects on phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and protein kinase C (PKC).
