This drug binds to macrophages, which are cells that destroy foreign substances and clean up dead cells or cell debris in the body, preventing them from releasing inflammatory substances. 4-Methylaminobenzoic acid also inhibits carbon source utilization by bacteria, slowing growth and metabolism. The molecule has a macrocyclic structure with two hydrogen bonds that allow it to bind to protein molecules on the surface of bacteria.
